Estepona is a small town on the western Costa del Sol with an overall population of around 70,000. Despite its popularity as a tourist resort, the town has maintained its Andalusian charm — quaint cobbled streets lined with local restaurants and bars, unusual shops and bodegas keep the old-town atmosphere intact.

The area combines eight golf courses, seven museums, a beautiful marina and a well-appointed beach. The old town is nestled in lush countryside and sheltered by the mountains that surround it; with the Mediterranean at its feet, Estepona is quieter than other Costa del Sol towns while keeping the luxuries of modern life within easy reach. The famous towns of Marbella and Puerto Banús are 10-15 minutes away by car.

Estepona offers excellent facilities — some of the best luxury health and wellness centres and spas on the Costa del Sol, a variety of trendy bars, restaurants and shops, alongside well-stocked supermarkets and convenience stores. The combination of authentic character and modern amenity has made it one of the strongest emerging markets on the entire coast.

Things to do in Estepona

Estepona has 17 beaches, a 3 km sea promenade and a beautiful marina full of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Water sports — jet-skiing, water-skiing, boat trips and fishing — are widely available, and the elegant promenade is perfect for a morning jog or evening stroll. Eight reputable golf courses are within easy reach, and almost a dozen spas, hydrotherapy and thalassotherapy centres are dotted across the area, many attached to exclusive hotels.

Just outside town, SELWO Adventure is one of the largest nature parks in Europe — covering a million square metres and home to 2,000 animals from five continents. Cultural highlights include the 18th-century Church of Virgen de los Remedios with its rococo façade, the San Luis Castle and the Museums of Archaeology and Palaeontology. The Sierra Bermeja natural area to the north offers hiking, picnicking and panoramic views over the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and the African coastline from Pico de los Reales.

Infraestructure

Although Estepona lies on the western edge of the Costa del Sol, all main towns of the coast are within easy access by car and bus. The N-340 coastal road and the A-7 motorway connect Estepona with the rest of the region — Málaga Airport is just over an hour away and Marbella and Puerto Banús around 20 minutes.

Gibraltar Airport is a useful alternative for UK-bound travellers, with daily flights to London, Liverpool and Manchester. Regular bus routes provide comfortable and reliable transport to and from Estepona.

Residency in Spain entitles you to free public healthcare via Social Security contributions, with full access to the Centros de Salud network and the public hospital system. Affordable private health insurance is widely available through Mapfre, Caser and Sanitas.

There are state and private health facilities in Estepona itself, and one of the most prestigious hospitals in the Málaga region — Hospital Costa del Sol — is approximately 30 minutes away.

State schools in Spain are operated by the local Autonomous Community and accept pupils according to area of residency, with applications made at the local Town Hall.
